On September 23rd in 1973, Chile’s Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto passed away at the age of 69 from prostate cancer. Most of you know him as the poet Pablo Neruda.
Neruda is responsible for some of the most beautiful love poetry of our time. Naturally, his love poems gained much popularity after the release of the film Il Postino in the nineties. The film’s soundtrack featured various celebrities reading Neruda’s work. We recommend it to all Neruda fans!
It would be absolutely ludicrous for us to list our favorite poems or collections in this post… for it would simply be too long a list as there is not a single poem of his we dislike! His impact on other poets cannot be denied and due to the sheer volume of his work, there is little chance of Neruda ever being forgotten. However, if you are looking for a recommendation, we will suggest World’s End and On the Blue Shore of Silence: Poems of the Sea, both of which can be found in English. If you are interested in a good biography of Neruda. we suggest a look at his memoirs which was co-written with Hardie St. Martin. It is simply called Memoirs.
This evening, we encourage our single readers to go out and expose your truest feelings and deepest desires to that special someone - evoke Mr. Neruda and we guarantee you romance awaits! For our couples out there…well… pour a glass of red and read to each other… satisfaction guaranteed!
Write on in peace Mr. Neruda!
